Wheel advice

I am going to expose my ignorance here but who cares, im not a petrol head but love my Z3.

I want to swap out the wheels.....I have the standard 16" ones (5 spoke) boring type and want to go for a 17 with a bit more style. Can i buy any BMW 17 inch? Do they all fit? Are the widths different and a problem?

I really dont know that much about wheels so could do with some advice.
