Whats This?

I found this in an old tool box in work and its been bugging me as to what its for. Its some type of screw driver but I cant work out the application. So come on who's the clever clog's and and can work it out or knows what it is for?

Yep, the SPQR tappet adjuster was widely used by home mechanics back in the days when engines were generally OHV with push rods and rockers. Although I've been working on this type of engine most of my (long) life, I never bought one of those, preferring the old ways with a ring spanner in one hand, screwdriver in another hand and the feeler gauge in my third hand. For the first time for decades I no longer own a car with a rocker shaft. No, that's not true, my MGB V8 has rocker shafts but with hydraulic lifters it doesn't need tappet adjustment. Ah, memories!

Its the SPQR tappet adjuster that needs no feeler gauges and was patented in 1927 and now I know how it works it pure simplistic genius. ...... That would be the tool not @gookah

I might well know the very men who made it.

A small number of Minimodels employees (people who made Scalextric in the 1960s) left the factory in Havant mid 60s and set up their own engineering firm in Rowlands Castle. Rowlands Castle is a small place so there must be a good chance.

And I do know these guys personally as I've been researching the history of the factory in the 1960s

I'm curious what the SPQR stands for. I suspect it's not the latin phrase...

I wondered if the SP stands for Sykes Pickavant? Doesn't really fit with being made by a little company in Rowlands Castle though. And maybe the QR is Quick Release?

I know just who to ask...

I had several if these type of tappet adjusting tools for various Chrysler (Simca) engines until some scroats robbed my garage back in the 90's.
