What is this?

I know I'm asking a lot of questions .. But I have another, what is this? its just abbove the drive shaft and is rather oily, I can't see where the oils coming from but appears the oil from this has ran down from this and is on my gearbox too ...

why would it have oil on it then? i cant imagine it needing that much oil? ... im going to have to jack it right up and have a propper look i think!
