Views on Stone Guards for Quarter Panels on the Z3

Lots of people use the vinyl magnetic guards available in different finishes. I had these chrome finish ones on my black z3.
I found that magnetic stone guards damaged the paintwork. Perhaps not such a problem if meticulously clean each time they are fitted.
I binned mine, both stone guards and car were cleaned within an inch of their lives and still damaged the paint.
I only used them for longer journeys, and then removed them.
I made some PPF ones, protect the arches well and pretty much invisible.
I had chrome effect ones on my red Z no problems and I have black ones one my silver one with no problems. Geoff

I haven't had any problems with my guards I would fit chrome side vents

Must say,I had the magnetic type guards on 3 different Z3 s and removed them every time I cleaned the car . They may not be perfect, but I was getting a lot of stone chips in that area without them. The mudguards on each wheel arch do a good job, but I think they spoil the look of the car. Nothing seems perfect and it's just a matter of choice.

Found they scratched the paint even when being careful plus it was always wet under them even weeks after any rain. Binned!

' ....... weeks after any rain..' I used to take them off whenever I wasn't using the car, literally a couple of seconds to take them off. When I sold my Z3 s you could not tell they had ever been on there. I would imagine if left on all the time there would be an effect on the paint, less exposure to sun and weather than to surrounding paint plus some say the magnetic layer can affect the paint long term. Like many things,it's a matter of choice.
Had magnetic, now have 3m carbon stick on. Prefer the stick on as they don't get blown off with the pressure washer and don't need taking off to clean then dry and refit. That area gets stone chips otherwise

Had them on both of mine never had a problem
Oddly enough I've just removed mine tonight after I noticed a build up of dust etc.
The paint is damaged underneath.... body work is on the agenda for this year so I've put them back on rather than look at the slight bubbling.

If you have them I'd recommend cleaning behind weekly
I use them with no issue, I think front mudflaps do a better job of preventing chips in on the rear wings.
