Yes, I appreciate that lorries can take a while to overtake other lorries on dual carriageways and it can be frustrating when they take about a mile to get past as the overtaking lorry is not much faster than the slower one. However this morning one belonging to Cowan Transport sat alongside another on the A38 from near Ripley to Derby, about 8 miles! The road is downhill or flat until near Derby and these lorries created a huge tailback of traffic. Totally pointless, how much journey time did the lorry gain?

Time the Police clamped down on that practice Ken, it causes frustration and ultimately danger. And as you point out it was for very little gain.

Not before time Andy, some HGV drivers seem the think they own the road. Bad enough on a 3 lane, mind you in some US states they're allowed to travel at up to 80 mph.

Most HGV drivers are cowboys who think they can do anything!

The M5/M6 junction in Birmingham is a regular spot for HGV drivers to show their lack of regard for other traffic. They always queue on the M6 nose to tail, blocking the inside lane, and preventing traffic merging frm the M5. Impatient drivers who manage to get ontothe M6 then pull into the centre lane without a decent view of the approaching traffic conditions. Speeds ar relatively low, so bad accidents are rare, but it is about time an effort was made to improve the HGV drivers' manners, and thereby improve traffic flow.

I once asked an artic driver mate why the lorry in the inside lane couldn't slow down by just 1mph to let the overtaking one past in about 20 seconds.
His answer- "why should I?" !!!

Until they develop a camera that can do it, don't hold your breath!

Surely all they have to do is follow and film it?

Unfortunately, there's no traffic cops to follow and film it.

No good on YouTube, need to be on the roads.

I'm aware some forces, sorry "services" have traffic departments, but certainly locally, when was the last time you saw an actual traffic patrol car?

You see plenty of "S"camera vans secreted in bushes and Highways Agency sat at the side of motorways, but the appetite for good old fashioned traffic police, who specialised in road traffic law and who weren't afraid to stop a lorry and check their tachographs and other paperwork just isn't there anymore.

If you think elephant racing is bad now, wait until all cars are restricted too. theorectically they should all be travelling at the same speed, but as with HGV their limted top speed will be slightly different and so take an age to pass another vehicle if they so decide.

Not looking forward to it, and only hope by the time its mainstream I wont be so bothered about fun spirited driving.

Will be worth more in a few years time, when all you can buy is limited cars - it wont be retro fitted to exisiting vehicles on the road.

Thinking of setting up a business making red flags, along with durable soled footwear

Don't sell the Zed - move to France!

I bet the reason the police do not bother HGV drivers is simply that their employers contribute to the police Christmas party etc - I know a businessman who does so in order that his van drivers can cruise at 90 mph all day! If this took place in a banana republic, it would be called what it is - corruption.

Some of you need to try driving something big, or towing something heavy.
Why should they slow down, getting back up to speed uses a huge amount of fuel.
Driving hours are regulated, saving a few minutes here and there can be the difference between getting home/ another load or having to chuck it early because they have no hours left.

Why is a lorry drivers time more important than anyone else’s, we all have to be somewhere. Agree about the hours but it goes with the job and I always allow trucks to keep moving where I can, it’s the rolling road blocks I don’t like.
