Yes better to go for oem but it'll do for the minute to get it going. If I get a couple of years from it it's served it's purpose and I'll get a better quality one.
You might find that an after market one will not sort the symptoms, can't remember who it was on here that did it and it was just as bad so went for OEM and it sorted it.

There are 3 levels of parts quality in effect, there is cheap after market (I would not use these), there is OEM Quality after market ( if you buy from ECP like I did, you get a genuine Bosch item but with their logo ground off) and then there's Original OEM fron BMW. You pays your money and takes your chance !

Mid range from ECP it is then. Cant afford oem at the moment. Was going for the cheap one but I'll nip in store in a bit and change it for the next one up.

Just been on and had a look and ECP they only list the one with the attached wire? At £90 - the discount code would you say that is cheap or middle spec?

Yeah I think so Bill. With the discount it's £50 from ECP.

My new OEM camshaft sensor for the M44 (B12.14.1.743.072) cost £98.36 from Sopers last June. Haven't had cause to replace the crankshaft sensor.

Ok there appears to be a lot of confusion over which sensor is for my car. Been into ECP and a local parts supplier today and both want to see the sensor to match it up.
@pgunter told me where it is at the rear of the engine which is now out but I can't trace the cable to the other end as it's impossible to get your arm through.
Anyone got any idea where it plugs into or do I have to start stripping bits off to get at it?
Any help appriciated tar.

I think my 2.0 was a different motor Dave but the crank sensor on it was fitted just above the starter motor and the lead plugged directly onto it.

The diagnostics indicate a crankshaft sensor fault so I would change that one first.

For single vanos M52 engine

Crankshaft sensor item 9 (as Bills earlier post)

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CJ32-EUR-12-1997-Z3-BMW-Z3_28&diagId=11_6173

Camshaft sensor item 17

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CJ32-EUR-12-1997-Z3-BMW-Z3_28&diagId=11_6172

If your car is twin vanos, log into the link below, put your car details in and you will see the bits fitted to your car

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select

Hope this helps

Just don’t round the torx head bolt that holds it in...not that I’ve ever done that (and various other engine bolts that invariably sees me paying the garage to fix the diy attempt!

If its the one in front of the engine it’s much easier with viscous fan off

Got the torx bolt out at the sensor end fine, it's finding where the electrical connection is at the other end I'm struggling with.
Thanks for the help guys, @Jack Ratt for the diagrams.
