Guys, It appears that Liz wants to sell her car and has asked a value, IMO its probably £600-£700 as its now a cat D, however I do agree with everyone else that you should keep the car and take Robs offer, even better if you could source the correct colour door as it will save you around £300 in labour.

Restored to pre-accident condition it will be worth about 60% of the £1,800. That's the cruel reality of even a Cat N. Cat D doesn't exist anymore. So £1,100 to £1,200.

Take your pick what someone would be prepared to pay in current condition. £600-£700 is a fair shout. But if you can only find someone who wants to break it, it might not even make that - certainly if it ends up in the corner of the drive for a while as its future is decided and the MOT is allowed to lapse.

I do hope Liz wasn't taken for a ride by the insurance company as they can be greedy with retention valuations. They play on people's attachment to cars knowing they will get considerably less at salvage auction.

I suspect she will have paid every bit of the £600-£700 and possibly more.

Very fortunate hit though. A few inches in any direction and front and rear wings, sill covers, door frames/chassis and wing mirror could have been damaged and made the car beyond economical repair.

All very valid points mate. Personally I think it has to be worth repairing, it's now fun motoring for little cost?

For those wondering its a 1.9 1997, MOT history is good only a couple of fails and assorted advisories in its history, usual things worn bushes and low tread on tyres, 80,000 odd miles. Seems it's too good to break when a used door would sort it. Hope she takes the offer of a replacement door up and saves the car.

If I might be so bold and I say this only for the benefit of others in the future (no wish to rub salt in your wounds Liz), I would not have put that through insurance. But then I can effectively replace it for nothing with a part sat in the garage.

Yes you have an obligation to declare accidents anyway. But that to me is arguable as a parking scuff - where's the line in the sand? I'd have asked the other party to pay for it and if they said no or had done a runner, I'd get peed off but once I'd calmed down I'd just swap the door and say no more.

The real concern for me is the car insurance. Firstly because they'll write-off a Z3 just because someone broke wind on the bonnet. And you end up paying big time one way or another if you make a claim. The loadings are unreal with many policies even if you had a no fault claim and the repairs were only a few hundred quid anyway.

I have a pristine Topaz Blue passenger door in the garage right now. So remember that if someone does the same to your TB car :)

Remarkable how often it's the N/S door that gets clobbered too, probably down to people going into parking spaces at too high a speed.
