I love your last bullet point. Do what you can to measure twice cut once, but in the end you just have to go for it. Indecision paralysis is the worst.
The cold weather has set in. I've removed my fancy shmancy summer tires and stored them inside.
Three items addressed today.
-Steering wheel
-Wheel well liner
-Clear coat runs
Steering Wheel!
During one of my autocross sessions it rained. The steering wheel, which is definitely showing its age...
A hair dryer and soapy water is useful. You can use a credit card to "squeegee" out wrinkles and such. Intricate bends can challenging because the wraps can only stretch so much before they will tear. You can use a razor blade to alleviate some of the folding where curves/radius is needed.
I...
Yes, the pre-tensioners are a part of the SRS module. If you work anywhere near that module be sure to disconnect the battery as hard top said. There is a large capacitor inside the module (this is how airbags still work during a crash when the battery has been crushed). There is also an...
Gearing up for winter and next steps!
I'll take the wheels off and store them for the winter (I don't want that fancy rubber to de-laminate in freezing temps).
1. Work on the clear coat runs
2. Knock down all the orange peel
3. Finish off wheel well liners
4. New windshield weather strip
5...
Enjoying the car before I get to wrenching on it (or sanding in this case) again. Took it out for some drives and an autocross! Unfortunately, it was very wet so traction was definitely an issue, but it was still really fun as always.
Here's a fun clip:

@ruan The engine bay is still red. I don't plan on selling this car and I'll be the only one looking at it so I'm ok with that choice :)
@Zephyr The front clamshell uses the same hinges as the original Z3. I have removed the cable release mechanism. What I have now are hood pins (the black tear...
Thank you for the kind comments. It feels great to hit this milestone. I still have many hours of fixing/tweaking things and definitely a lot of hours correcting my clear coat.
I found that the fancy new adjustable headlight brackets will unscrew themselves over time. I had a headlight...
I still have plenty to work on, but given the season is coming to a close I'm going to enjoy the he car for a while. It's on the road!
I'll post a few more pictures and videos when I get the chance. Feels good and sort of surreal that I've gotten it this far :)
Thanks!
Still a little bit to do but I really like this color!
I did find a lot of clear coat runs and almost entirely covered in orange peal. There are a few methods I'll look into to correct those. I'll start putting parts on the car soon!!
Big day! Finally got the paint and clearcoat on! That's the last big project I have planned!
There were a few issures here and there but I will be able to handle that later on. Very excited to put it all together!
Two steps forward and one step back.
I cleaned and used a tac rag on the car. Then put down some color! How wonderful! Let's take a moment for this:
Pretty exciting. So exciting that I had yet another comedy of errors. The good news is that the paint is pretty forgiving to lay down once...
I'm getting close to the finish I can almost see it.
I finally got all 3 coats of primer on, then sanded it to 320grit.I had a few burn through so I spot shot them with more primer. When I was done it was time to clean then wet sand down (up?) to 600grit. This was fairly satisfying. It's so...
The weather was amazing today so I decided to go for primer! Which means finishing the paint booth. Here it is...bask in the reflected glory of it...especially the two trash cans I'm using as weights to keep it from collapsing.
I did this so I could have some extra space when spraying the back...
Alright. Time to get the ball rolling faster here! The car has been blocked out to 320 grit after laying down some guide coat. Cleaned up the car and cleaned up the garage. Time to make murder room....I mean paint booth.
I did a fair amount of research here so this is the best I could come up...
I am excited for how this is going. Taped off the car and blocked the whole thing out to 320 grit.
First I had to mask everything off. I didn't have to go crazy because this is just for keeping sand down and help me know where I need to sand and where I can ignore. I'm not doing a proper frame...
My shoulders are getting a workout! I am currently blocking the whole car to 180grit and finding/correcting high and low spots. The trick is to pretend you're a zombie and just sand until you can't lift your arms anymore.
Something I would like to suggest to anybody who is blocking their car...
I think/hope I made all the big patches I need to. Down to just sanding the whole body to make sure it's clean and straight. Feels like I turned a corner!
Built up the rear fenders on both sides so the trunk(boot) appears to line up better.
Then filled out the passenger side door gap.
Then...
