Afternoon everyone,

I know this question may have been asked multiple times before, but I'm I'm currently in the market for a new set of wheels, I'm on the fence when it comes to either sticking to 17" or going for 18".

The car has recently had a set of coilovers fitted and was polybushed before my ownership, the aim is to have a "fast road" setup.

Are there any negatives when it comes to the handling department when using larger wheels?

Many thanks,

Tramlining can be an issue and obviously you sacrifice a bit of comfort. ..but sounds like that isn’t an issue for you with your intended use.

I've had 18s before going back to 17s. If you are living in Spain where the roads are smooth as glass, could run 18s even 19s without too much issue. UK roads are generally horrific.

17s are significantly better and as you are running the car lower with stiffer springs, same as me, I'd always be an advocate of 17s.

18s will likely be heavier thus increasing unsprung weigt. Worth considering but on pure comfort, I found them very harsh with lowered suspension.

What wheels are you looking at?

I’ve been considering the same question. My Z3 is a 2001 2.2 non sport version on standard suspension and a low mileage car (37,000 miles).

Changed from 16” wheels to style 32 18’s when a set became available with tyres. I was concerned regarding possible harsh ride, tramlining etc.

Fitted The wheels and adjusted tyre pressures to 30 psi all round. I’ve had no isssues whatsoever with a harsh ride, tramlining, vibration etc. Driven on a variety of roads. 18’s certainly look the part and very happy with the change.

Just my experience and opinion, obviously the set up and condition of suspension and steering systems will have an impact.

Thanks for all the comments.

I've ordered a set of 18" Dare DR RS (BBS RS rip-offs) - will see how they go.
Went for 8J front, 9.5J rear. ET42.

Will be wrapped in a set of newly available Kumho PS72 tyres - I could only find one review from Germany, but they appear to be comparable to the likes of the Pilot Sport 5.

Wheels arrived earlier this week - had the chance to fit them after work.

Thankfully, they don't look too big (in my opinion) - think the lowering and smaller tyre profiles help with that.

I went with ET35 in the end as I was advised 42 may not be the best fit - turned out to be very good advice, although I added 15mm spacers on the rears.
