Hi all,

Does my 1998 Z3 have standard can bus carrying engine data (such as RPM) in either of the OBD ports?
Where is the best place to tap into this?

Your vehicle supports an OBDII communications protocol that came before the widespread introduction of CAN.
Early UK vehicles didn’t have a standard OBDII connector as they weren’t legally required to have it. The engine controller OBDII communications interface is routed to the BMW 20-pin diagnostic connector in the engine bay. Engine parameters can be read from this interface with a readily available 20-pin to 16pin OBDII connector.
