Lots of rain forecast for Tuesday, so with it being dry, I decided to get some driving done on Monday evening. First was the B4391, then on towards Bala on the A4212, then up the B4501. What was supposed to be a loop of the Evo triangle turned into a much longer spider’s web of fabulously empty roads. A544 and A543 both ways several times until I needed to fill up, so headed west on the A5 to Betws-y-Coed and then back to the Oakley Arms on the A470. All fantastic roads, mostly deserted.

Feeling energized after a superb meal at Hangin’ Pizzeria, I figured I may as well press on to the silliest railway station in the world. Journey to Anglesey along the A5 was very enjoyable, with some dramatic scenery. After a fuel stop near Bangor, I headed back towards Porthmadog and stumbled upon the majestic Menai Bridge.

Drove out to Bala this evening, then on to one of the best bits of road, the B4391 between Bala and Llangynog. Very little traffic, and only a few naughty sheep to watch out for. Then, back to Porthmadog to have supper at Spooner’s with all the train spotters.

Finally back home. Final day in Wales involved working from the hotel in the morning, then picking up my son near Barmouth and heading home. After having a look around Barmouth, we first headed to the Penmaenpool toll bridge, then on towards Rhayader via the Mach Loop and the mountain road from Forge and the B4518. We unfortunately didn’t have time to explore the Elan Valley, but popped into the visitor’s centre for some souvenirs. While we were there we saw a group of MX-5 club members from Kent visiting the South Wales group. The rest of the trip home was reasonably boring and with a fair amount of traffic and a half hour delay following an accident. We did manage to stop off at Caffeine & Machine for a very nice pizza for dinner and then it was a pleasant short blast along the A422 before joining the M40 and it was motorway all the way home.
Door to door, 1012miles in the 5 days. A memorable week.

I will look out for that next time I’m there. I had a pint of Snowdonia Pale Ale as it was 3%. It was a bit watery and the burger bun was a bit stale, but the surrounding made up for it and I left happy.
