Hi everyone.

Hopefully a quick one for yo. I've an opportunity to acquire from local (unusual for n.ire) a complete rear end. Suspension. Breaks etc for good coin. Still to see condition but curious. I've a 2.8 widebody. This is off a narrow body. Do they have the same subframe or is it different?

Not sure about the sub frame but the trailing arms are different to the narrow body.

Cheers lads. shame. These rarely come up at home here. Adding extra x to every purchase just for postage.

Not 100% need it anyway just doing a fair bit of work in the winter and it's on the consideration list to swap out. No huge rush for one. If get the front of the car done over winter I'll be well pleased with myself tbh lol

Depending on condition I might purchase the beam and swap it out. Everything else is grand condition just the beam not in great nick.

Cheers everyone for quick replies

Can confirm beam is the same. 1.9 pre-facelifts have smaller arms. Everything else has the same.

If you've managed to get your subframe and trailing arms in bad condition, then I'd say the underneath would be terrible also. So probably yours is OK and for the cost and delivery of that set, you could get your own shot blasted and you could paint it in Epoxy mastic paint or even powder coated. Wouldn't be much more, depends on what that breaker wants for that subframe and delivery.

Whilst you have teh subframe out you may want to do some intermediary repairs to the body in behind where the subframe bolts to the chassis.

Yeah was looking at those the other day while I was under it wondering how much life they had left in them :pompus:

If i do remove the rear subframe is it much bother removing the fuel tank straps? Does the tank have to come out also?

With the beam out ....absolutely easy to do... one bolt on each strap at the back, and then unhook them from the front end. May need some release fluid on the front hooks as they tend to get stuck in place. Carefully rock them and they loosen off.
Tank stays in situ.

If you do need to change them, contact me , I do have a few of my replacements still available.

If you need to know anything about rear end refurbs.....contact @Lee

Cheers Mazza,

My biggest issue is being N.Ireland. In contact with @Lee at the moment on Facebook who might be able to twist my arm yet into replacing the whole rear sub :poke:. Would love to leave it with him for a few weeks but being England its either a trip or a transporter job which kinda sucks.

Might just save the pennies purchase a whole rear and attempt the swap myself once i get a bit of seasoning with removing the front control arms etc (hardly lifted a spanner in my life!). Have a bit of a shopping list gathering in the garage at the moment for work over winter. Have a progress thread going but dont have my recent purchases listed just yet but have a fair bit of work to do to her.

Might put a few coin away once the Covid noose is loosened (been on furlough so purse has been tightened last few months) but back full time again now so hopefully get a bit more play money gathered up again to get her singing the right tune.

Talking with @Lee helped me realise shes actually quite a good starting point with the right care taken with her. So leaves me a little bit happier putting some money into her

Hi D0nni I’ve been doing mine in a lay-by in my village so anything is possible, as inspired by the zedshed, a lot of documented cases there with reference photos/ A lot more satisfying doing it yourself as your motivated in the protection and finish unless you go the shot blasting and powdered coated route which in hindsight would have saved me a lot of hours of prep work.

I plan to do most of the work myself. I've been talking to Lee at the zed shed who has a complete rear sub atm for sale. Unfortunately I'm cash poor atm so gonna have to let this one go by me, just timing as usual. But have said if another complete one comes in spare in the near future I'll take it from his hands.

Was pricing my way through and if can get away with just parts and no labour costs I should be down about 2k in parts. Which in the long run isnt too bad when I consider what I paid and potentially what I will have at the other side of it. Have a further ~500 to spend on the front ontop of what I've got to get it new again. Breaks. Suspension. Strut mounts and a replacement engine belly brace. Have a good few things gathered already. Just want all sitting at hand ready to go so can tackle it all in one dismantle job. Then once I've the front done I'm gonna look about starting the rear end.

It does mount up doing nut and bolt restoration. Ive refurbed where I can but I’ve been planning this the last three years so have bought stuff over that time while working away from home https://zroadster.org/threads/time-i-pulled-my-finger-out.28012/ I’ve just got to put it all back now

Should be proud of that progress lad. Looks 100%. I was showing lee my subframe and he said it's not too salvageable. Which he is right like. It is pretty badly rusted. If I'm to get any amount of years out of her it's going to need replaced. But sure. If I didnt want a project I wouldnt have bought a wagon for £1500 lol if I can get it looking anywhere near what yours is sitting at there I'd be a happy lad :D
